Why is security important on my computer?
If you store any data that you would not like publicly broadcast to the world it is in your interest to provide a level of security which protects that information.
With recent epidemics of viruses, trojans, and worms, it has become increasingly important to keep your computer protected.
All I do on the Internet is check my email or play games. Do I still need to worry about security?
On August 11, 2003, a worm known as "MS Blaster" (click here for details) was released on to the Internet. It infected many Windows NT/2000/XP computer that was not firewalled or patched and connected to the Internet.
On August 18, 2003, another worm known as "Welchia" (click here for details) was released on to the Internet.
Both of these worms infected Windows-based computers in a rather untraditional manner--you simply had to connect to the Internet to be infected.

How can I secure my computer?
Microsoft recommends 3 steps to ensure that your Windows-based computer is protected:
- Use an Internet firewall. A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that creates a protective barrier between your computer and potentially harmful content on the Internet. It helps guard your computer against hackers and many computer viruses and worms.
- Get Computer Updates. Security updates help shield your computer from vulnerabilities, viruses, worms, and other threats as they are discovered.
- Use Up-to-Date Antivirus Software. Antivirus software helps protect your computer against most viruses, worms, Trojans, and other unwanted invaders that can make your computer "sick." Many computers come with antivirus software installed. You can also purchase antivirus software and install it yourself.
Just having an antivirus software program installed is not enough, however. To help ensure you computer stays healthy, you need to keep your antivirus software up to date. You can help your computer stay healthy by using up to date antivirus software.
